Web Insurance Quoting Forum

Project Overview
Insurance is a highly competitive field for brokerages, meaning efficiency and accuracy are paramount for capturing strong leads. As Questrade, we were tasked with helping ThinkInsure improve their web quoter. We set a goal to make a quick flow that allows many user types to get a competitive and accurate price while considering their individual needs for both home an auto insurance.
The challenge
ThinkInsure's online flow enabled users to input basic information and receive a quick price estimate. However, the limited data collected resulted in lower-quality leads for the business and less accurate pricing for users. Additionally, the design required an update to align with current design trends, WCAG AA Accessibility compliance, and to improve consistency in language across the platform.

The Plan

Research and Analysis

I started by researching competitors to  understand what other brokerages ask on their web quoters, focusing on goals like price  accuracy, question count time to complete, and user effort.

Create an Action Plan

Based on the research and competitor analysis, a design plan was created,  incorporating Questrade's design system rules and business requirements for the new screens.

Design Phase

I used an iterative design approach, working in sprints   to create screens, present  them to stakeholders, and collaborate on revisions to align with business goals.

Iterate

Iteration on the designs would occur every sprint. This  allowed continual refinement between design, product, and stakeholders. Ensuring alignment across the team at every step.

Launch

Unfortunately, because of strategic changes within Questrade, we were never  able to launch the new web quoter. This also meant there was never an opportunity to test with users during or after project completion.

Early Design Iterations

To begin with the design phase the plan was to add the minimum requirements for the entire flow before getting into the details. The minimum requirements meant including things like the minimum amount of questions required without considering the wording of the questions and having to make quick decisions on which components will be used for the questions. The reason this was the ideal approach was because many teams were going to be working on the designs starting one sprint after the designs were created. This meant a quick baseline needed to be created before moving on to the fine details and that refinement would come later, all of this means curating an iterative environment was key for this project.  The early iterations can be explored below:

Conclusion

Working on this project was both challenging and rewarding. Collaborating in a dynamic, agile environment where designs evolved rapidly required adaptability and a deep understanding of iterative processes. While the full redesign was not released due to strategic decisions at Questrade, some proposed improvements were incorporated into the Think Insure web quoter. I would have loved the opportunity to launch the complete redesign, gather user insights, and refine the experience further. Despite this, the project was a significant learning experience that strengthened my skills as a UX Designer and helped me grow professionally.
